University of Charleston-Beckley hosts Jazz Appreciation Month

Beckley, W.Va.– The University of Charleston-Beckley will host the John Yurick Quartet as part of Jazz Appreciation Month on Monday, April 15 from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Learning Resource Library. Admission is free and open to the public.

The John Yurick Quartet features John Yurick on keyboard, Ron Buckland on drums, John Sellards on bass and Gary Klein on tenor saxophone. Klein holds the distinction of having been part of the New York jazz scene during the glory days of the big bands, travelling America and sharing the sounds.
The group shares a vast amount of experience among the members, who will also be speaking about the music form, sharing first-hand stories that will recount work with jazz greats such as Woody Herman and Al Cohn.

The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History established Jazz Appreciation Month to encourage Americans to listen to, read about, and appreciate this significant American art form. UC-Beckley is hosting this event to share the fun and significance of great American jazz with the community.

The 2012-13 academic year marks UC's 125th anniversary as an academic institution. UC was founded in 1888 as Barboursville Seminary, renamed Morris Harvey College in 1901, moved to Charleston in 1935 and was renamed the University of Charleston in 1978.
