PRINCETON - The Basic Science Center at Bluefield State College was abuzz on Friday. Students, parents, and teachers swarmed into the auditorium for the Mercer County Reading Bee, an annual event that originated with the late Tom Colley during his tenure as Executive Editor of the Bluefield Daily Telegraph and Chairman of the Literacy Committee of the Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce.

As in previous years, each county elementary school sent a team of their top readers. Teams won points by utilizing a variety of reading skills, demonstrating strong comprehension, commanding a large vocabulary, and being able to interpret literature through readers' theatre.

Former teacher and Readers' Theatre Judge Russell Hatfield was so taken with the students' performances that he addressed them prior to the awarding of prizes. "I am so impressed with the talent that is in this room," Hatfield said. "I hope you will always keep reading because reading can take you far."

Dr. Krotsing, President of Bluefield State, welcomed the students to the campus and reiterated Hatfield's advice. "I see you are getting a copy of Dr. Seuss's book 'Oh the Places You'll Go,'" she said. "Reading really will take you many places, whether they be chances to travel and see real places, or places you will go in your mind through books."

Master of Ceremonies, Tom Chaffins, recognized Mr. Jim Nelson, Bluefield State College, for his consistent hospitality, and Eugenia Hancock, Chair of the Literacy Committee, for her faithful work to make Reading Bee a yearly event for the children of Mercer County. Chaffins also gave kudos to the Lady Blues basketball players who served as guides for the day, to Darryl Hudson, Publisher, Bluefield Daily Telegraph, and to Marc Meachum and George McGonagle, president and chairman of the board, respectively, of the Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce.

Other event sponsors included BB&T, the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, Bluefield State College, Bluefield WV Rotary Club, Charles and Dafney Peters, Cookie Johnson, Craft Memorial Library, Diane Coulthard, Frank Smoot Charitable Trust, George M. Cruise Foundation, Henry R. Glenn, Jr., Larry Ratliff, Princeton Rotary Club, WVVA, Ryan's of Princeton and Bluefield, and the Mercer County Board of Education.

The following team awards were presented by Rick Ball, Mercer County Assistant Superintendent of Schools: Overall Winner - Oakvale (First), Brushfork (Runner-up); Readers' Theatre - Brushfork (First), Montcalm Elementary (Runner-up); Skills - Straley (First), Glenwood (Runner-up); Vocabulary - Mercer and Oakvale (Tied for First); Straley and Bluewell (Tied for Runner-up); Comprehension: Brushfork (First); Mercer (Runner-up).
