WVU is considering a tuition increase

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia University is considering another tuition increase for undergraduate and graduate students as it waits to hear how much state funding it will lose.

Vice President for Administration and Finance Narvel Weese told the Board of Governors on Friday that WVU expects to lose $13.3 million at its main and regional campuses in the coming budget year.

But declining state revenues could still change that number.

Weese says the extent of the lost funding won't become clear until the Legislature approves the new state budget, likely around April 15.

If tuition rates are raised, he says WVU would raise scholarship funding accordingly so college remains within reach for many families.

Last summer, the board approved a 5 percent increase in tuition and fees. WVU is now seeking cost-cutting ideas.
