GAP MILLS, W. Va (WVVA)-- A brush fire in Monroe County burns 75 acres of land.

It began near a residence in Gap Mills Wednesday evening around 5 PM.

There were no injuries, and no structures have burned so far. The fire is mostly contained, but could kick back up Friday morning said Union Fire Chief Larry Dunbar.

Firefighters said the blaze began when a neighbor was burning trash and wind kicked up the ashes, which spread rapidly because of windy and dry conditions.

"The winds are really drying out the land," said Chief Dunbar.

Crews from several fire departments battled the fire Wednesday and all day Thursday as it spread up Little Mountain.

Dunbar told WVVA the mountain terrain made it hard for crews to battle the blaze.

"We are doing a lot of it by hand," he said, "using rakes and chainsaws and leaf blowers. It's hard to get the equipment up there... it's rocky and very rough."

Dunbar described the fire as large, and burning rapidly.

Union, Ronceverte, and Lindside fire departments responded to the fire, as well as a rescue squad in case of injuries.
