Mount Hope to demolish historical sights

MOUNT HOPE (WVVA) -- Some Mount Hope history is coming to an end.

The city is moving forward with a demolition project that'll clear eight historic structures out of the city.

The buildings were ruled to be a unsalvageable and a threat to public health.

They received a $1.5 million federal grant to complete the project.

One of the structures that won't make it, is the old middle school.  Residents say they'll be losing a lot of memories.

"I want to see them keep the old one.  Because that was old brick.  It really is.  And I'd like to see them get it cleaned up and remodel it and make something nice for the teenagers.  That's all I want to see done," says Bessie Dower.  All four of Dower's children attended the school.

Mount Hope Mayor, Michael Martin, says there are no set plans for what's to come of the land.
