Secrets to small business success amidst big business take over

Posted:

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- New, big name businesses have been the buzz around town for the past year or so, but that doesn't mean good news for everyone.

Even though local favorite, Calacino's, is having high sales this year, owner, Jerry Zaferatos, says he'd be lying if he said they haven't felt some impact.

Along Main Street in Beckley, many entrepreneurs have had to close up shop, feeling the burn of their customers leaving in exchange for larger chains.

Across town, Pasquale's says they're holding steady.  They attribute this to their prime location off of I-77.

The next new chain to the area will be Panera Bread.  Even though local businesses could take another hit, it's building and opening will bring more tax revenue and jobs to the area.

Both Calacino's and Pasquale's acknowledge they've been the lucky ones to survive.  They say longevity, a good reputation and strong community ties have been key to survival.
