Harsh winter eats away most of W.Va. DOT snow removal fund

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A harsh winter has eaten most of the West Virginia Department of Transportation's snow and ice removal budget.

That will put a dent in the DOH's summer road paving. The agency might not have any leftover snow removal funds to fill potholes and do other paving work.

Last year, Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox diverted nearly $30 million in leftover snow removal funds to secondary road paving.

Department of Transportation spokeswoman Carrie Bly says that the agency has spent $52.7 million of its $58.2 million snow and ice removal budget as of April 3.

Bly tells the Charleston Daily that four of the state's 10 highway districts have overspent their snow and ice removal budgets.
