WV House Panel Revives Road Funding Study

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A proposed study of how West Virginia funds its roads is back on the drawing board.

The House Roads and Transportation Committee met briefly Friday to reverse its previous vote scuttling the study measure.

Party-line votes revived the bill and then advanced it to House Finance.

Minority Republican critics say it's ill-timed and too expensive. They cited the pending report from a blue ribbon highway commission.

GOP delegates also expressed fears that the study would lead West Virginia to replace gas taxes with GPS tracking devices. While meant to measure and then tax miles traveled, critics warned these devices could lead to Big Brother-type government surveillance.

The study would also look at swapping gas taxes for a higher consumer sales tax.

The Senate had passed the bill on Monday.
