UC Beckley slashes rates in half for on campus students

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- More changes are in the forecast for UC Beckley.  This time, they benefit students electing to live on campus.

Thursday the school announced a reduction in room costs for dorm dwellers beginning next fall.  Prices will drop by half -- from $3,600 to $1,800 for the entire 2013-2014 school year.

"We think the advantage is that residential experience, which is part of the transformational process that young men and women go through on a college campus," says Jerry Forster, Regional President of UC Beckley.

This semester, the school only filled 5% of the 400 available beds on campus.  Forester says UC is financially stable, so they're able to make this part of their rebuilding efforts.

"The on campus student  traditionally will be more involved with the on campus activities.  It brings a vibrant environment to the campus.  They're in the dining hall, they're in the library.  They're participating in not just classroom projects but in organizational projects with other students.  It helps the student to persist," says Forster.

"I think it made my college experience," says Kim Bess, Student Life Coordinator.  "I don't think that I would have enjoyed college as much as I did unless I stayed on campus."

Students like Jessica Dunkley say, even though this is a good deal, living on campus just doesn't fit into everyone's lifestyles.

"I'm married and it was just easier for us to live off campus," says Dunkley.  "I don't have a long commute, so it really hasn't affected me any because I'm here most of the times anyways."

Still they'll be working to at least get Hogan Hall filled up, calling it another strategic step in making the university thrive.
