Pit Bull registrations on the rise in Bluefield

BLUEFIELD, W.Va (WVVA) -- Pit bull registrations have soared in Bluefield since city officials proposed banning new pit bulls within city limits.

Police Chief Dennis Dillow says about 20 people have come forward to register 30 different pit bulls. Only 8 owners had registered their dogs prior to March 26.

A 2008 ordinance requires owners to register their dogs with the Bluefield Police Department.

Chief Dillow says it has been a positive response with owners coming in to register and he expects more will do so in the future. Dillow says officers will be enforcing the code and will issue citations if owners are not complying with the rules.
