Out-of-state volunteers help West Virginians

ALDERSON, W. Va (WVVA)-- Special visitors to the Two Virginias are taking on tough challenges as they do volunteer work in local communities.

A mission group from Troy, Michigan is in Greenbrier County to do service work including fixing roofs damaged by storms, building drainage ditches to save yards from flooding, and other projects for people in need.

More than fifty students and their youth leaders are working on site in the Alderson and White Sulphur Springs areas throughout the week.

"They learn about what it means to serve others through Christ and not only to tell people about Christ, but to do work through their actions," said one of the youth group's leaders, Matthew Kunkel.

Volunteer Hanna Guidry said, "It's one of those things that giving is better than receiving. So I love helping out other people, no matter where they are."

Zach Kunkel told WVVA he was enjoying the Alderson area during the trip.

"The country here is beautiful," he said. "It's nice to get out and serve people in other areas."

The Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church in Lewisburg is helping sponsor the Michigan youth group as they finish their work in the area.

They are staying in the Alderson Community Center until their work is done.
