WVa Senate bill gives judges functional pay raise

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The West Virginia Senate Finance Committee has passed a bill that would give state judges an increase in take-home pay.

Like most state employees, state judges have a pension system that is funded by employee and employer contributions. Because of better than expected fiscal returns, the judges' pension plan is overfunded.

The proposed bill would decrease the amount that judges pay into the plan from 10.5 to 7 percent in the next fiscal year. After that, the percentage would be determined by the actuary who governs the pension fund.

Senate Majority Leader John Unger said the change would mean an increase in judges' pay of $4,160 per year.

Courts Administrator Steve Canterbury said that the pension plan has consistently returned money to the state when it has been overfunded
