International Variety the Focus on New Festival in Athens

Posted:
ATHENS, W.Va. – The International Gifts Festival, featuring a unique collection of handmade crafts, will be held at Concord University. Representing the diverse cultures of artisans in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, the event will begin April 15th, and will run every day from 9 a.m. till 4 p.m. until April 19th.

The festival will be located in Concord's International Office on the bottom floor of the Jerry and Jean Beasley Student Center.

"The goal of this year's festival is to make it different from other Gifts Fair Festivals and attract a lot of new people," said Sharon Rowe, instructor in English as a Second Language and one of the festival's organizers.

The International Gifts Festival, sponsored by Concord's International Students Office, will feature intriguing, handcrafted gifts, jewelry, personal accessories, home decor items, sculpture, textiles and other incredible finds from around the world. All the items displayed at the festival will reflect the culture and spirit of the country they came from and offer buyers a connection to the heritage of other civilizations.

Concord officials say the festival is a great opportunity for faculty, staff, students and community members to purchase crafts made in more than 30 countries.

The purchases will give artisans from developing countries opportunities to earn income that pays for food, education, healthcare and housing. This support will help sustain longstanding trading relationships that empower artisans, support thriving businesses and strengthen communities.

Concord University's International Students Club has hosted the sale for the last 14 years, displaying handcrafted items marketed by Ten Thousand Villages, a nonprofit alternative trading organization based in Akron, Pa. that focuses on fair trade, helping artisans in poor countries to make a living.
