Blue Ridge PBS to shut down 2 transmitters

Posted:

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) -- Blue Ridge PBS is shutting down two transmitters that carry the station's over-the-air digital signal to parts of Southwest Virginia and Tennessee.

Media outlets report that the transmitters in Norton and Marion will be shut down sometime before June 30.

The decision means viewers in the coalfields and the Tri-Cities region of Bristol, Va., Bristol, Tenn., Kingsport, Tenn., and Johnson City, Tenn., will no longer receive the station's over-the-air programming through digital antennas or converters.

Blue Ridge PBS president James Baum attributes the move to a loss of state funding and automatic federal budget cuts.
