W.Va. Senate weighs modest magistrate pay bill

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A handful of West Virginia magistrates would get pay raises under a measure advancing in the state Senate.

State law now links magistrate salaries to their county's population. That triggered pay cuts in January for Lewis, McDowell, Wetzel and Wyoming County magistrates.

A bill endorsed Wednesday by the Senate Judiciary Committee would change the salary formula. That would restore the earlier pay in those four counties while boosting salaries in two additional counties.

This proposal differs from one passed earlier this month by the House of Delegates. That bill would pay all magistrates statewide the same, granting raises to 38 magistrates as a result.

Wednesday's measure advances to Senate Finance.
