Tazewell's Lawson named Region VII Superintendent of the Year

TAZEWELL (PRESS RELEASE) - Tazewell County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Brenda B. Lawson was recently named Region VII Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS).  She was selected among 19 division superintendents comprising Region VII.  As Regional Superintendent, Lawson is eligible to be considered for the 2013 Virginia Superintendent of the Year

Dr. Lawson was selected by her fellow school superintendents for her leadership and work on behalf of Tazewell County Public Schools' 6300 students and workforce of approximately 1,000 employees. Since taking over the leadership role in 2002, Lawson has challenged the community to become active participants in the education of children.  She helped to engage the community in a reading initiative to ensure 90% of the student population is reading on grade level by the time they exit third grade.  Dr. Lawson has been strong in her commitment to the safety, health and well-being of all stakeholders in the school division.  Under her leadership, Tazewell County Public Schools was one of the first school divisions to seek District-wide Accreditation through Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI).

"It is most humbling to be recognized by one's peers, especially in these challenging times facing public education. The children, parents and school board employees served to make this recognition possible for me.  I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to serve Tazewell County as division superintendent," stated Lawson.

The Virginia Superintendent of the Year Selection Committee will convene to review applications submitted for the title of 2013 Virginia Superintendent of the Year.  The Committee will review the applications based on criteria to include: leadership in learning, communication, professionalism, and community involvement.  Virginia's Superintendent of the Year will be announced during the VASS annual conference, May 8, 2013, in Roanoke, VA.
