Hearing scheduled on W.Va. medical marijuana bill

CHARLESTON (WVVA) - West Virginia lawmakers are looking at a bill that would legalize the medical use of marijuana.

A hearing on House Bill 2961 also known as "The Compassionate Medical Marijuana Use Act of 2013" is scheduled for Thursday in the House Health and Human Resources committee. The bill, sponsored by Democratic Del. Mike Manypenny of Taylor County, would allow patients with serious illnesses to obtain and use the drug if recommended by a doctor.

Nine other House members, both Republican and Democrats, have co-sponsored the legislation.

If passed, qualifying patients would be able to possess up to six ounces of marijuana and would have the option to cultivate up to 12 plants in their homes. Five compassion centers would be set up across the state to provide patients with access to the drug.

There are currently 18 states in the U.S. that allow for the medical use of marijuana. Thursday's hearing is scheduled for 4 p.m.
