Train Derails With Hazardous Material

Posted:

HAYSI, Va. (AP) -- Police and CSX officials say a train has derailed in the southwest Virginia town of Haysi.

CSX spokesman Bob Sullivan tells the Bristol Herald Courier (http://bit.ly/X3eIYK ) that the 64-car, two-locomotive train was headed from Hamlet, N.C., to Russell, Ky., when 15 cars derailed Saturday morning. Sullivan says no injuries, deaths or evacuations have been reported.

Sullivan says some of the derailed cars contain hazardous materials, and one was leaking an acid that's used in herbicides and for other purposes. CSX officials, the Virginia State Police, state hazardous material crews and local fire departments were on the scene Saturday afternoon.

Breaks Interstate Park announced that it closed access to the Russell Fork River at the park's Garden Hole and Ratliff Hole sites until officials decide conditions are safe.
