New legislation would require bulletproof vests

Posted:

(WVVA) -- New legislation could be costing money, but helping to save lives.

A bill is in the West Virginia Senate that would make it mandatory for law enforcement to wear bulletproof vests at all times, during the line of duty.

This comes after two Oak Hill Police officer's lives were spared last year while wearing their vests.

The bill could come at a cost for smaller police departments though.

Chief Chris Bishop of Quinwood says any financial burden for his department is worth saving a life.

"I like to go home at the end of the day. And it's one of those things that you just never know what you're going to run into, so it's better to be prepared for it than not," says Bishop.

The bill is currently in the Senate finance committee.

Senator Bill Laird tells WVVA that they should have final word on its fate in the next couple weeks.
