UC-Beckley hosts community health fair

BECKLEY, W.V. - The UC-Beckley physician assistant program will educate the Beckley community about disease prevention by hosting a community health fair on Tuesday, March 26 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the library in the Learning Resource Center located at 512 S. Kanawha St.  The event is free and open to the public.

The health fair will include presentations about Tobacco cessation, abstinence and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), a breast health and cancer screening, Alzheimer's awareness, and information on alcohol abuse from the physician assistants. Healthy eating, oral health, safe driving, and drunk driving will also be discussed. Women will be able to learn about domestic violence and sexual assault. For parents who would like to bring their children, balloon animals will be made and offered free of charge.

Armando Guerrero, a physician student at UC-Beckley proposed the idea for the event.

"Primary prevention of disease is a focus of the Physician Assistant and in order to better serve our community our class would like to hold a community health fair event," said Guerrero.

Several programs from UC-Beckley and the Beckley community will be joining the physician assistant program at the health fair. Some of these programs include the diagnostic medical sonography (DMS), radiology technician and occupational therapy department, the women's resource center. Play dates and Lunch Socials (PALS) will also be on hand, which is a local community group for mothers, and local law enforcement.

Local high school students, mainly seniors, are urged to come and participate. UC-Beckley is passionate about being a part of the UC mission and are concentrating on community involvement.

"We would also like to focus on UC's effort to fill the gaps in healthcare through its education program as well as let the community know about the resources that UC-Beckley has to offer," said Guerrero.
