Raleigh Co. teacher listed in the final six of a national competition

Glen Daniel (WVVA) -- One of the top teachers in the nation is right in Raleigh County. Everett Jeremy Rodriguez teachers theater and music at Liberty High School. He's one of the top six finalists in this year's Great American Teach Off for teachers grades seven through 12.

"I don't just teach a class, I have a program," says Rodriguez. "I'm looking at who students are gonna be in five years as opposed to who they are now."

Rodriguez says innovation is key to teaching. He's taught at liberty for six years, and his students agree with America, that this is a recognition he deserves.

"He has a great sense of humor and if he ever says he's gonna do something for you, he will do whatever he has to do to help you in anyway possible," says Dennis Meadows, a senior who has spent the past four years in Rodriguez's classroom.

"In theater, we do a lot of improv and it just helps you think a lot in the mornings and gets you woke up and having fun," adds Christian Legg, a junior at Liberty, "And then in music appreciation, he's taught me to be more open-minded about music in general."

He insists that there's a bigger reward than the recognition.

"I'm very blessed to get a chance to watch them grow, to perform, to create. To see that music changes lives, and then impress upon the idea that they can change lives," says Rodriguez.

If interested, you can vote for Rodriguez daily at http://7to12gato.maker.good.is/projects/8015. The winner will be announced at the end of April.

If Rodriguez wins, he says he's using the $10,000 grant to fund a computerized piano lab for Liberty High School.
