COPY-UPDATE: Former PIkeView coach, teacher charged with sex crimes

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - A former teacher and coach at PikeView High School who resigned earlier this year amid a state police investigation has been charged with multiple sex crimes.

Jonathan Kirk, 34, turned himself in to authorities Monday afternoon and appeared before magistrate shortly thereafter.

Kirk is charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian or custodian; use of minors in filming sexually explicit conduct; use of obscene matter with intent to seduce a minor; distribution and display to a minor of obscene matter and use of obscene matter with intent to seduce a minor.

There are 18 counts in all, involving multiple victims ages 16-18.

Sgt. Clemons with the West Virginia State Police told WVVA News that twelve victims have come forward against Kirk.

According to victim interviews, allegations of sexual misconduct began in 2010, the same year that Kirk started his employment at PikeView.

Clemons said that Kirk was previously employed by Oakvale School before he began teaching at PikeView.

Among the accusations outlined in criminal complaints obtained by WVVA News, Kirk allegedly inappropriately touched, solicited sexual favors from, and communicated both verbally and via electronic media in a sexual nature with multiple female students at the school.

Kirk also allegedly showed explicit photos of himself to multiple accusers and requested that they do the same.

"This is troublesome as a parent, to send your child to school where you expect them to be safe and have something like this happen," Clemons said.

Clemons said that the State Police is asking other possible victims to come forward.

Kirk's bond was set at $100,000.

Rachel Lucas will have more on the arrest this evening on WVVA News at 6.
