Southern W.Va. nesting bald eagle hit by train

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A nesting male bald eagle is presumed dead after it was hit by an Amtrak train in the New River Gorge.

Three Rivers Avian Center director Wendy Perrone says there's been no sign of the eagle since the accident occurred Sunday morning.

Perrone tells the Charleston Gazette that the train's crew saw the eagle come off the tracks as the train rounded a curve. The bird then hit the windshield of the locomotive.

Volunteers watched the nest Sunday and saw only one eagle, which is believed to be the female.

Perrone says male eagles bring food to the nest and also do nesting duty. Since the male eagle is missing, the chances are high that the eggs won't hatch or the chicks will be lost.
