WVVA Exclusive: Coal executives address the community on their operations

PINEVILLE (WVVA) -- Executives at Cliffs Natural Resources, a Cleveland-based industrial company with Appalachian coal operations, took a trip to Wyoming County. Representatives hosted a breakfast with community members, seeking honest back and forth conversation about the state of the coal industry.

"The markets are slow right now because of the slow industrial growth," says Senior VP of Global Coal Operations, David Webb.

Webb says people living in areas surrounding their Pinnacle and Logan County Coal operations still need to know they care and will continue to give attention, time and dollars to Southern West Virginia.

Community members say they're pleased with Cliffs' efforts.

"Anytime you have a company of that size that employs this many people in our area, in a small area like this, it's important, but when it's a company that gives back to the community with community projects it's even more special to us," says Jason Mullens of the Wyoming County Commission.

"I'm not anything about hopelessness," continues Marsha Timpson with Big Creek People in Action. "I say keep on, keeping on. I'm about keeping the faith, and so when you partner with people like Cliff's that helps you keep that faith and keep on."

Webb says a hands on approach will help keep operations afloat during the tough times.

"We want to be there in the good times, but we also want to be there in the bad times," he says. "We have to do it right by events like this. We have to be a good citizen in our community. We have to reach out to the issues of that community and we have to do our best to be a good partner in the business."
