OCEANA (WVVA) - A Wyoming County woman is on a ventilator in critical condition and her boyfriend is behind bars after allegedly striking her multiple times with an axe.

Authorities say the incident stemmed from an argument the couple had last Friday at their home in Short's Mobile Home Park in Oceana.

The Oceana Police Chief says 46-year-old Tracy Stewart admitted to hitting his girlfriend, 50-year-old Lenora Ellis, multiple times in the head and once in the arm with an axe.

Stewart said he reacted in self defense.

When police arrived, Ellis was unconscious on the floor. She was airlifted to Charleston Area Medical Center.

Stewart has been charged with malicious wounding an attempted murder.

Police say they're still investigating and more charges could be forthcoming.
