UPDATE: Family returns from troubled cruise to burned home

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - A Bluefield family returned from a troubled Carnival cruise on Sunday to what was left of their home following a weekend blaze.

The McNeal family returned to Bluefield Sunday after their cruise on the Carnival Dream was cut short due to a faulty generator.

According to an Associated Press report, the Dream was in St. Maarten last Thursday on the final stop of a Caribbean cruise when the crew announced it would not be sailing home to Port Canaveral, Florida, because of a mechanical issue with a diesel generator.

Passengers on the ship were instead flown back to the United States.

Once the McNeals touched down in Florida and began their two day drive home, they began receiving numerous calls that their house was on fire.

The blaze began at their Union Street home just after 5 a.m. Sunday. The Bluefield Fire Department said the home was 40 percent involved when crews arrived.

The home sustained significant damage to the second story

The state fire marshal is investigating, and is expected to have a ruling on what caused the fire in the next 24 hours.
