2nd Senate committee advances W.Va. education bill

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The West Virginia Senate will soon decide whether to pass Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's proposed overhaul of state public schools.

The Senate Finance Committee endorsed the bill Thursday without making any changes on a non-unanimous voice vote.

Tomblin is seeking to change the way teachers are hired and transferred. His bill would also give counties more flexibility for setting the yearly school calendar.

The Senate Education Committee advanced the bill on Tuesday. That committee amended the bill to cut state Department of Education personnel spending by 5 percent in each of the next two budget years.

Senate Finance learned the bill would reduce education costs by $630,000 next year, and $2.1 million the year after that.

Groups representing teachers and school workers oppose most of the bill's proposals.
