UPDATE: Miner Killed in Boone County Identified

CHARLESTON (WVVA) - The man killed in a mining accident in Boone County Wednesday has been identified.

Asa Fitzpatrick, 63, of Kermit, died as a result of injuries received when a piece of the mine fell from the ceiling while he was preparing to install a rib bolt, according to a release from the West Virginia Department of Commerce.

Fitzpatrick was a roof bolt operator with 40 years mining experience.

The accident took place at Newtown Energy Inc. Peerless Rachel Mine at Racine in Boone County.

RACINE, BOONE COUNTY (WVVA)--- A man is dead after being killed in a mining accident in Boone County.

Boone County 911 tells WVVA that the accident happened around 5:00 P.M. Wednesday evening.

The man was a roof bolter at the Newtown Energy's Peerless Mine which is owned by the Patriot Coal Corporation.

This is the fifth mine related deal in West Virginia this year.
