Local family helping homeless in Greenbrier Co.

LEWISBURG, W. Va (WVVA)-- Homeless and displaced people may be more common in larger cities, but the issue still hits home across the Two Virginias.

Walter Lockhart and his wife Francine began the "Homeless, Inc." nonprofit organization to help combat the problem in Greenbrier County.

They use donated money to allow those in need to stay in hotels and have warm meals for a day or two and get them back on their feet.

"A lot of times, they are waiting for a social security check or a child support check," said Walter.

"They just need a helping hand," Francine added.

Now, the Lockharts want to start a homeless shelter, to help those people long-term.

"They need a place to sleep," said Walter. "We can't allow them to sleep on the ground behind Hardee's or under the bridge on 64. It's not right. and it doesn't really take that much. If everybody chips in a little, we can do it.."

They have been going around Greenbrier County getting letters of support to present to property-owners who may be interested in allowing them to maintain a house for a low-cost, long-term lease, and use it as a shelter for those in need.

"We just need a place that is out of the way," said Walter. "We will be good neighbors... it will be supervised and alcohol-free."

"If we had a home, we could help them maybe find a job and they could save their money up, and be able to go on their own then," said Francine.

Walter said he is interested in a house in Lewisburg, but he and Francine have not yet secured a location for the shelter they want to start.
