Innovative W.Va. waste facility gets tentative OK

Posted:

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) -- A Public Service Commission administrative law judge has signed off on a proposed waste facility in Berkeley County that would produce solid fuel from trash.

In an order filed Monday, Administrative Law Judge Meyishi Pearl Blair says the proposed facility is innovative and unique to West Virginia.

Blair recommends that the PSC grant the facility a certificate of need. The recommendation will become the PSC's final decision if no exceptions are filed within 15 days.

Entsorga West Virginia LLC wants to build the $19 million mechanical-biological solid waste management facility near Martinsburg.

Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority chairman Clint Hogbin tells media outlets that Blair's order is a signal that the Eastern Panhandle's dependence on landfills as a primary disposal source is ending.
