DANESE (WVVA) - Police have released more details on Sunday night's fatal car accident in Fayette County.

According to a news release from the Fayette County Sheriff's Department, 51-year-old Franklin D. Terry of Danese was killed when the pickup truck he was driving struck a bridge abutment on Route 41 around 8 p.m. Sunday.

Upon impact the cab and bed of the truck separated, with the cab going over an embankment and in a creek.

A slab of concrete from the bridge was also knocked loose and landed on the roof of the truck cab.

Emergency personnel extricated the victim from the truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say that evidence suggests the driver ran off the roadway, lost control and slid more than 100 feet before striking the bridge.

The crash remains under investigation.

Following is the full news release from the Fayette County Sheriff's Department:

PRESS RELEASE

A Fayette County man is dead following a motor vehicle accident in the Danese area of Fayette County. Sheriff Steve Kessler released the following information concerning this accident:

Just before 8:00 pm on Sunday, March 10, 2013, notification was received thru the Fayette County 911 Center of a motor vehicle accident on WV Route 41 in the Danese area of Fayette County, WV. Sheriff's Deputies, EMS personnel and Fire Department personnel from the Danese Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to respond to the scene.

Upon arrival at the scene it was determined that a small pickup truck had apparently struck a bridge abutment on WV Route 41. The cab and bed of the truck had separated, with the bed of the truck on the roadway and the cab of the truck over an embankment in a creek. A large slab of concrete from the bridge had broken loose and was lying on the roof of the truck cab and the driver was trapped inside of the wrecked vehicle. Fire Department personnel were able to extricate the driver from the wreckage of the truck, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver has been identified as Franklin D. Terry, Jr., age 51, of Danese, WV. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time, but evidence at the scene indicated that the driver had ran off of the roadway, lost control of his vehicle and slid more than 100 feet down the roadway before striking the bridge abutment. It has not yet been determined if drugs or alcohol were factors in this collision. This accident remains under investigation by Deputy S.G. Milam of the Danese Detachment of the Fayette County Sheriff's Office
