Raccoon tests positive for rabies in Mercer Co.

The Mercer County Health Department reports that a raccoon has tested positive for rabies in Mercer County.  The animal was found on Princeton Avenue in Bluefield.  A human was exposed to rabies during this incident.  Anyone who has been bitten by a wild raccoon or who are concerned that their pet may have come into contact with a wild raccoon should contact the Mercer County Health Department at 304-324-8367.

This is the first positive sample in Mercer County this year.  Health Department officials say three known positive rabies cases were confirmed in 2012.
