Piece of World War 2 history honors veterans in Rainelle

RAINELLE, W. Va (WVVA)-- Pieces of the past are remembered in a local community.

A block from the old Rainelle High School is inscribed with a "V" for Victory.

The old school was built in the 1940's during the Second World War.

The block will eventually be moved to the new elementary school in Rainelle, which opened earlier this year.

"We are hoping to... put it in the new school as a display," said Kay Smith, a member of the Greenbrier County Board of Education. "It is mainly to be used to remember those people who served in both the first and second World Wars."

Since the block was discovered, a team of Rainelle alumni have been unearthing more and more history about the old building.

Smith said WWII was an era in which it was hard to find materials to build a school, and it is amazing to see this school constructed during that time. She added that patriotism has always been a big part of life in Rainelle and this should help keep it in students' minds.

School officials say as students pass by the victory block, it will remind them to honor veterans and their country.

A dedication for the new school is planned for later this year.
