Deputy awarded for saving life of state trooper's wife

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- A routine traffic stop to check on a reported drunk driver turned into a life saving event.

Corporal Greg Kade with the Raleigh County Sheriff's Department was awarded for Meritorious Conduct Thursday.  He responded to a call of a drunk driver on the side of the road February 22.  This ended up being no drunk driver, but Diane Frye, a state trooper's wife who was unconscious in a diabetic coma.

Diane's blood sugar had dropped to 21 and her body temperature to 93 degrees.  Emergency workers say if Kade would have arrived any later, Diane might not have made it.

She is thankful to be healthy today and thanks Kade for his hard work.

"Thank you for listening to God, and thank you for being a police officer.  So many times they get a bad reputation when I know from my husband being a state trooper that they don't get told enough what a good job they do."

Meritorious conduct is only awarded to deputies who demonstrate extreme bravery.

Kade says the real award was being able to see the Fryes together, alive and well.
