WV cites teacher and admin trends in the education debate

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A leading critic of Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's education proposal is urging lawmakers to look at the numbers.

The American Federation of Teachers-West Virginia says the state has lost 700 classroom teachers over the last decade. The ranks of administrators and other non-teaching professionals have meanwhile grown by more than 1,000.

Group President Judy Hale also says that the salary gap between teachers and top administrators widened during that time.

Hale presented the figures Wednesday with Jackee Long of the School Service Personnel Association. Both called on lawmakers to focus more on the education system's bureaucracy. They were joined by officials from the AFL-CIO and various labor unions.

Tomblin's bill proposes numerous changes to public schools, including to teacher hiring and transfers.  A coalition of business groups supports his legislation.
