Volunteer fire departments face funding struggles

HINTON (WVVA) – In the wake of the recent major fire in Hinton, focus is now shifting to the struggles that men who fight the fires face themselves.

Out of the seven fire departments in Summers County only one department offers paying positions.

All six of the county's volunteer fire departments rely on a small budget from the state and private donations from town residents to keep the doors open.

Firefighters we spoke with say that lack of funding is a major issue the departments face.

They say while operation expenses climb each year, funding continues to decline.

To compensate, volunteers are petitioning for a mandatory fire fee of $25 per household.
