Police: Crowd stood by, took video while Charleston man beaten

Posted:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Charleston police say more than a dozen people watched as a man was kicked, stomped and robbed, and didn't call for help.

Police say surveillance video shows that some in the crowd took photos and video of the beating on their cellphones.

Police Lt. Steve Cooper tells media outlets that at least three men attacked 20-year-old Brandon Coltey in the Transit Mall in downtown Charleston on Monday night.

Cooper says the surveillance video shows one man hit Coltey in the head with a brick. The Charleston resident fell to the ground and another man beat, kicked and stomped him. A third man took Coltey's wallet.

Coltey remains in critical condition at a local hospital.

No arrests have been made.
