Bluefield's MLK Bridge to be demolished, replaced

Posted:

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (AP) -- The state Division of Highways plans to demolish a bridge in Bluefield and replace it with a new span.

Media outlets report that the construction phase of the $6 million project is expected to begin in 2014.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge was built in 1966.

City manager Jim Ferguson says DOH inspectors determined that the bridge should be replaced because of safety reasons.

He says most of the project's cost will be paid for with federal stimulus funding.

The city had pledged $300,000 for the project. Ferguson says Norfolk Southern will contribute $200,000 of the city's pledge.
