CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The battle lines are drawn as groups representing West Virginia teachers target Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's proposed public schools overhaul.
The American Federation of Teachers-West Virginia and the West Virginia Education Association are scheduled to appear Tuesday before the Senate Education Committee to discuss Tomblin's legislation.
The groups are decrying provisions addressing teacher hiring, professional development and the school calendar. They've sought to rally their members and supporters against these proposals.
Administration officials argue that some of the groups' criticisms are wrong. One such allegation warns the bill would wipe out paid holidays.
The two sides also seek to resolve differences through a series of closed-door meetings.
A coalition of 40 business groups, meanwhile, has emerged to support the legislation. It includes numerous trade associations as well as individual companies.
