Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge to be Demolished and Rebuilt

BLUEFIELD, W. Va (WVVA)- The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge in Bluefield, WV is slated to be demolished and rebuilt early next year.

The project will consist of three phases.

Phase one involves designing and engineering the bridge, which should be completed by the end of this summer.

Phase two starts this fall where the city will accept bids for the bridge's construction, and phase three is the actual construction of the bridge in early 2014.

The project is still a ways away, but city manager Jim Ferguson is already working on a plan to deal with traffic impacts.

The bridge, which spans a national freightway, will be paid for mostly with federal stimulus money. Most of the leftover cost incurred by the city will be covered by Norfolk Southern.
