W.Va. gov includes US teaching group in ed bill

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A nonprofit education group is ready to accept Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's invitation to West Virginia.

Teach for America recruits graduates of top colleges for high-needs public schools for two-year terms. The New York-based organization counts around 10,000 teachers in 36 states.

Tomblin's proposed education overhaul would allow for the alternative teaching certificates that Teach for America participants would need. The bill also offers a path for them to stay in West Virginia once they complete the two years.

A Teach for America official said the group is eager to send teachers to the state. It's been recruiting within the state for several years, with around 25 West Virginians currently participating.

The group is also fending off criticisms from teachers' unions, who oppose allowing the program into West Virginia.
