Traveling the two Virginias: Concord University Faculty Artist Exhibit

Posted:

It's finally Friday, but before you plan out all of your free time members of Concord University's Art Faculty are hoping you'll consider reserving some time for the arts.  An exhibit at the Paine Gallery in the Bluefield Art Center is giving faculty a chance to show off some of their hard work.

Jamey Biggs instructs ceramics and sculpture on the Athens Campus, he says there's frequently an opportunity to show his work on campus, regionally or even at the national level, but a community exhibit is truly special.  "It brings everybody together."

Lauri Reidmiller specializes in art education. Her silk paintings are characterized by bright colors, she hopes the quality of the exhibit along with the accessibility will encourage people to think outside of the box during their free time.  "I think it's a wonderful way to bring the arts to everyone. Most students go to a movie on the weekend. Well, why not go to a gallery?"

A third Faculty Artist, Kevin Bennington instructs Graphic Design and is hoping visitors get hands-on with his work combining images to show the impact littering can make on the beauty of nature.  "They transition from a very clean environment, to a very trashy environment."  "There is a purpose there behind being a Graphic Designer, and it is to communicate."  "If I could get one viewers to not throw a pop bottle or beer can or something like that into the lake that would be my ultimate goal."

A trip to the gallery can be an opportunity to learn or just enjoy.  Either way, the artists are happy to share.  "Please, come. Please come enjoy it," said Reidmiller.
