CHARLESTON (WVVA) - The West Virginia Department of Agriculture is warning pet owners of a recall on a variety of pet treats made by Kasel Associates, due to the possibility of salmonella contamination.

The recalled treats are sold at stores including Target, Petco, Costco and Sam's Club.

The treats were manufactured from April 10 - Sept. 19 in 2012. Anyone who may have any of these products are advised to dispose of them in a way that prevents people and animals from coming into contact with them.

Following is the full release from the WVDA:

A variety of pet treats sold in Target, Petco, Sam's Club and Costco stores, among others, have been recalled by their manufacturer, Kasel Associates, on the possibility the products are contaminated with Salmonella.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) noted that this recall is not related to its ongoing investigation of jerky pet treats made in China and that consumers should not ignore this warning. These products were all manufactured at Kasel's plant in Denver, Colo., from April 10, 2012 through September 19, 2012.

"I love my pets and I understand the importance animals have to the lives of their owners," said Commissioner of Agriculture Walt Helmick. "I urge everyone who has pets to check and see if they have any of these products. They have the potential to cause serious illness."

The recall was initiated after the Colorado Department of Agriculture tested a retail sample and found it to be positive for Salmonella. FDA's follow-up inspection at the firm found that all of the finished pet treat product samples and 48 out of 87 environmental samples tested positive. More than 10 different species of Salmonella were found in the firm's products and manufacturing facility, indicating multiple sources of contamination.

Because of the multiple positive tests for Salmonella and the production practices and conditions observed at the facility during the inspection, FDA believes that there is a reasonable probability that pet treat products manufactured in the facility from April 20, 2012 through September 19, 2012, are contaminated with Salmonella.

While there are no reports of human illness, FDA has received a small number of complaints of illness in dogs who were exposed to the treats.

Consumers who have any of these products, or who are unsure of the manufacturing date of their pet treats, should dispose of them in ways that prevents people and animals from coming into contact with them.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, lethargy, decreased appetite and fever.

Although rare, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart), arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.

The elderly, infants and those with impaired immune systems – both human and animal – are more likely to become severely ill from Salmonella infection. The bacterium can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in these vulnerable populations. Most healthy individuals recover from Salmonella infections within four to seven days without treatment.

Infected, but otherwise healthy pets, can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed any of the affected product or is experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Consumers who have purchased any of the below listed products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Kasel Associated Industries at 800-218-4417 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. MDT.
