Clean coal technology could be closer to reality

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WVVA) - Researchers at Ohio State University may be a step closer to making clean-coal technology a reality.

For more than 200 hours, a combustion unit at Ohio State was able to produce heat from coal while capturing 99 percent of the carbon dioxide produced in the reaction.

Simply put, researchers found a way to release the heat from the coal without burning it -- through a carefully-controlled reaction.

State coal leaders welcomed the news.

"This is a big step forward," said WV Coal Association President Bill Raney. "I think they can get the funding and they are working with some utilities down in the southeast. So if this works then this is another step forward."
