Coalfields Expressway at standstill without funding

RALEIGH COUNTY, W.Va. (WVVA)--- The Coalfields expressway, that would connect McDowell County to Beckley, has now halted due to insufficient funds.

The expressway would be a four lane, modern highway that would take you to McDowell County in half the time.  The project is at hault until funds can be found to pay for construction. The cost is estimated to be about 20 million dollars a mile.

According to an online petition, they say the project will help access to coal companies and not the general public. The supporters of the expressway say that it will beneficial to travelers and help bring jobs into the area.

Even if funds were appropriated from a National Highway bill it could take 10 years for total completion.
