SOPHIA (WVVA) - The Mine Safety and Health Administration is investigating a second fatal mining accident at a Raleigh County mine in the last two weeks.

Shuttle Car Operator John Myles, 44, of Hilltop, died Tuesday, from injuries he received while working at Pocahontas Coal Mine's Affinity Mine in Sophia, Raleigh County.

Myles had a total of four years experience as a miner, according to a release from the West Virginia Department of Commerce, and had worked at this mine for one year and two months prior to Tuesday night's accident.

Myles was hit by a scoop as he shoveled coal ribs. The accident happened at approximately 8 p.m.

According to a release from MSHA, the victim was transported to Raleigh General Hospital where he died.

This is the second mining fatality at the Affinity Mine this month.

On Feb. 8, 43-year-old Edward L. Finney of Bluefield, Va., died as a result of injuries sustained in an accident also involving a scoop.

Finney was crushed to death while pushing a scoop bucket insert full of trash onto a hoist. The hoist moved unexpectedly, reportedly picking up the scoop and trapping Finney underneath.
