CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Democrats must keep looking for a West Virginia candidate to run in 2014 when U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller retires.
A leading prospect for that contest, former U.S. Sen. Carte Goodwin, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he's out.
Goodwin turns 39 next week. He's raising two young children with his wife. Goodwin tells AP that working in Washington, D.C., would mean only seeing his family on weekends.
Democrats search for a candidate with Republican U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito already running a 2014 campaign. The 2nd District congresswoman unveiled plans to seek Rockefeller's Senate seat before the senior Democrat announced in January that he'll retire.
Goodwin served in the Senate in 2010. He's also ruled out running for Capito's seat in 2014, but isn't swearing off elected politics entirely.
