Greenbrier man busted for alleged embezzlement

RAINELLE, W. Va (WVVA)-- Police say 27-year-old Christopher Avis of Rainelle was stealing money from the Rainelle Go-Mart

He was an employee there, working behind the cash register.

Rainelle police began a 3-month investigation when the store owner reported items mysteriously disappearing from the shelves.

They examined surveillance video and observed Avis voiding out customer purchases as they tried to buy things. Instead of handing back the money they paid after their purchases were void, he was pocketing it.

Police told WVVA the customers had no knowledge of what was going on.

"The people thought they were purchasing the merchandise, but they actually weren't," said Chief JP Stevens with the Rainelle Police Department. "They didn't know it was free. They were just assuming that they did buy it."

Stevens said Avis was also stealing lottery tickets from the store and cashing them in to collect the illegal winnings.

"We were only able to prove it happened ten times," said Stevens, although he said he had reason to believe Avis took more than 10 tickets.

Stevens said Avis had cashed out a total of $125 of lottery winnings from the stolen tickets.

Avis is charged with embezzlement and 10 counts of uttering. A Greenbrier County magistrate set his bond at $15,000.
