School board reacts to bus driver's death

PINEVILLE (WVVA) - The superintendent of Wyoming County schools expressed sadness Wednesday -- hours after one of the county's bus drivers was killed at her home in an apparent murder.

Superintendent Frank Blackwell said grief counselors were on hand at Huff Consolidated School Wednesday following the death of 60-year-old Elaine Birchfield.

Birchfield drove a Pre-K through 8 bus route at Huff Consolidated.

Blackwell said Birchfield was very attentive to students and will be sorely missed by the children and her co-workers.

Birchfield was found dead inside her home Tuesday evening, the victim of an apparent murder.

Police arrested 20-year-old John New of Briar Creek early Wednesday morning and charged him with first-degree murder, grand larceny and daytime robbery.

Police say New was in the process of a robbery at Birchfield's home when she returned. New then allegedly killed Birchfield and fled in her vehicle.
