SOPHIA (WVVA) - The man killed in an accident at a Raleigh County mine has been identified as a Bluefield, Va., resident.

According to a release from the West Virginia Department of Commerce, 43-year-old Edward L. Finney of Bluefield, Va., died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident that occurred around 9:20 p.m. Thursday.

According to a previous statement from MSHA, the victim was crushed to death while pushing a scoop bucket insert full of trash onto a hoist. The hoist moved unexpectedly, reportedly picking up the scoop and trapping the victim underneath.

BECKLEY (WVVA) - A worker was crushed to death following an accident at a Raleigh County mine Thursday night.

Amy Louviere with the Mine Safety and Health Administration confirmed the accident at Affinity Mine of the Pocahontas Coal Company to WVVA News.

Following is the information released by Louviere:

A miner was killed at approximately 09:20 p.m., Thursday night. While pushing a scoop bucket insert full of trash onto a hoist, the hoist moved unexpectedly. Reportedly, the hoist picked up the scoop and trapped the victim under the scoop, causing crushing injuries.
 
MSHA personnel responded and have started an accident investigation.
